Updated Combat Actions
During a solo session of Syndrig, I enjoyed using the Combat Actions table to take some of the GM responsibility off of my plate. I found myself wanting a little more help determining what type of attack the enemy threw at my PCs. So, I picked one of the enemies and thought up 3 things they could do. An AOE, a single target attack, and a special move. I then rolled a d3 to pick the attack when I got an attack result on the Combat Actions roll.
That simple little mechanic really boosted the excitement of combat. One round the enemy was using their special move, the next they'd attack a PC, the next they would use their AOE ability. As a player, I just rolled the die and let it decide what the enemy was doing. It allowed me to focus more on the PCs and less on the enemies.
It worked so well, I decided to add it to the Combat Actions section of the game! Here are the simple rules:
To make enemies more interesting, give each enemy 3 different attack actions:
- Area of Effect (like Hell Scream on Goat Demon)
- Single Target Attack (melee/ranged)
- Special Move (Tail Swipe, Charge, etc.)
When an enemy attacks, use the 2nd die as a d3 to pick which attack they use.
